Daymond John discusses rejecting $1.3 billion bank offer and mentoring startups
Entrepreneur and FUBU founder Daymond John revealed that he declined a $1.3 billion credit line from a major bank to prioritize personal time and family. The bank, which serves approximately 1,000 of the world’s largest companies, had proposed an expansion plan involving mergers and acquisitions in sectors such as hospitality, flooring, lighting, and furniture. The offer included access to a specialist to assist in purchasing companies and leveraging John’s background as a minority entrepreneur to secure contracts. However, John estimated that accepting the deal would have required a 20-year commitment and the management of roughly 20,000 employees, which he felt would detract from his time with his family.
Separately, John is participating as a mentor for ‘Launchpad,’ a 14-day startup competition hosted by the digital entrepreneurship platform Stan. The competition, held in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, features 100 early-stage founders organized into approximately 30 teams. Participants compete for a $100,000 prize while receiving guidance from prominent figures including Gary Vaynerchuk and Sophia Amoruso. John emphasized that the program allows founders to pressure-test their businesses in a real-time environment.
