DB InfraGO launches €1.3bn Obertraubling‑Passau rail upgrade as bridge works disrupt central German routes

Deutsche Bahn's subsidiary DB InfraGO began a major renovation of the Obertraubling‑Passau corridor in eastern Bavaria. The €1.3 billion project will modernise about 120 km of track, replace more than 140 switches, renew roughly 90 km of catenary, and upgrade eight stations with barrier‑free platforms. Work on the Nürnberg‑Regensburg section is slated for completion by July 2026, with the Obertraubling‑Passau stretch finishing by December 2026 and full commissioning expected in 2027. Replacement bus services and schedule adjustments have been introduced to maintain mobility in the region during the construction.

In a separate effort, DB InfraGO is carrying out bridge repairs on the line between Merseburg and Weißenfels in Saxony‑Anhalt. The affected section will remain closed until at least 2 July, while the Weißenfels‑Naumburg stretch reopens on 20 June. Several regional and long‑distance services, including RB 25, RE 15, RE 16 and S 6, are cancelled and replaced by express and regular replacement buses. Passengers are directed to the DB and Abellio information portals for updated timetables.
