DC Studios clarifies script policies as Clayface and Lanterns progress
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has clarified that the studio does not accept spec scripts based on its intellectual property due to potential legal complications. Instead, the studio utilizes official channels for pitches. Gunn noted that Mike Flanagan was brought on to write the Clayface project after pitching the idea directly to the studio.
Development of a Clayface project predates the current leadership at DC Studios. Director Matt Reeves revealed that he had begun exploring a horror-themed story centered on the character following the release of The Batman in 2022. The upcoming Clayface film, written by Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, is slated for release on October 23, 2026.
In other DC Universe developments, the HBO series Lanterns has concluded its first season. The season finale, “Dirt and Stars,” follows John Stewart as he investigates the murder of Hal Jordan. Additionally, the film Man of Tomorrow, written and directed by Gunn, is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.
