DC Water and Detroit Sewer Agencies Finish Major Infrastructure Repairs

DC Water completed the first of four emergency repairs on the Potomac Interceptor, a 54‑mile wastewater pipeline serving the Washington, D.C. region. Crews repaired a 600‑foot section at Dulles International Airport on July 30 and will finish the remaining work by early September, while a separate long‑term repair near Rock Run is under way.

Interim CEO and General Manager Matthew Brown said the work “helps protect public health, the environment, and the reliability of a critical sewer line.”

Meanwhile, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department finished a $40 million Far West Detroit Stormwater Improvement Project. The new system will move more than 100 million gallons of stormwater to the Rouge River through two detention basins, improving water quality and reducing basement‑flood risk for about 1,200 homes. Deputy Director Sam Smalley noted the project “provides filtering and settling, so there are actually water quality standards for the stormwater that we discharge.”
