Clayface film debuts as R-rated body horror in DC Universe
The DC Studios film Clayface, directed by James Watkins, has premiered as the third theatrical installment in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Departing from traditional superhero tropes, the film is an R-rated body horror centered on Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries.
The plot follows Hagen, a rising Hollywood star in Gotham City, who becomes disfigured following an encounter with mob boss Markos Szabo. Seeking a cure, Hagen undergoes an experimental nano-cell treatment led by Dr. Caitlyn Corr, played by Naomi Ackie. The treatment results in Hagen gaining shapeshifting abilities but also causes him to lose his sanity and physical stability.
Produced on a modest budget of approximately $40 million, the film earned a North American opening weekend of roughly $24.5 million, contributing to a global opening total of over $44 million. While some critics have noted storytelling issues, the film received an A- CinemaScore, signaling positive audience reception for its genre-bending approach.
