D&D Head Dan Ayoub addresses OGL fallout and community trust

Dan Ayoub, the Head of Dungeons & Dragons, is working to rebuild community trust following the Open Game License (OGL) controversy. Ayoub acknowledged that the brand previously made “very loud, very public missteps” and lost sight of its core audience by assuming a “one-size-fits-all” approach to the game.

To address the fallout, which Ayoub compared to a cataclysmic event that reshaped the industry ecosystem, Wizards of the Coast has established a community council. The strategy involves listening to fans, retailers, and consumers to ensure the brand provides tools for diverse playstyles rather than dictating how games should be run.

Future efforts to reconnect with the community include the “D&D Icons” initiative, which aims to bring back outside voices and legendary creators to work on settings like Greyhawk and Dragonlance. Ayoub noted that while the company cannot make every product for everyone, the goal is for every player to find something in the brand's roadmap.
