DDR legacy shapes East German cultural funding; regional foundation seen as vital
More than three decades after reunification, the funding landscape for culture in East Germany remains strained. Private patrons like those in western Germany are scarce, and municipal budgets are tight in many places. Consequently, foundations increasingly step in to support cultural institutions.
The Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung has funded art and culture for about 30 years, supporting projects from small village mills to large museums. As municipal funding declines, the foundation has become indispensable to many cultural actors in the East.
