De Beers Group unveils SynthDetect 2 diamond screening instrument

De Beers Group’s Science & Technology division has unveiled SynthDetect 2, a next-generation desktop instrument designed for diamond screening. Developed in collaboration with industry trade participants, the device aims to integrate more effectively into the operations of diamond manufacturers, laboratories, and retailers.

The new instrument offers significant improvements in speed and productivity. According to the company, the time required for a full tray scan has been reduced from approximately 30 minutes to less than five minutes. The technology allows for the testing of multiple stones in set jewellery simultaneously without the use of a probe.

SynthDetect 2 features increased automation to reduce operator input and costs, while also expanding the variety of diamonds and jewellery types it can screen. The system includes automatically generated reporting and software updates to provide a comprehensive tool for the diamond trade.
