De Beers supports Botswana weaver Shakunona Parata at Homo Faber 2026

De Beers is supporting Botswana-based master basket weaver Shakunona Parata at the Homo Faber 2026 event. Parata, a member of the Ngamiland Basket Weavers, will perform live weaving demonstrations and present a new sculptural work titled ‘Diware’.

Created in collaboration with Mabeo Studio—specifically Beullah Serema and Peter Mabeo—the sculpture ‘Diware’ utilizes natural materials from Botswana, including carved wood, woven palm leaves, and naturally gathered porcupine quills. The project highlights traditional weaving techniques and cultural heritage passed down through generations of Parata’s family.

The Homo Faber 2026 theme, ‘An Island of Light’, focuses on the relationship between light, materials, and creativity. Parata’s participation aims to recognize both individual craftsmanship and the broader community traditions of the Okavango River region.
