De Havilland Canada secures $2.5B to double waterbomber production

De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited has reached an agreement with the Canadian federal government and Export Development Canada (EDC) for up to $2.5 billion in financing. The funds are intended to double the production capacity of the company’s Canadair 515 waterbombers.

The Calgary-based manufacturer plans to use the financing to expand manufacturing operations and hire additional workers. The company expects to make new aircraft production slots available starting in 2030. According to a federal government backgrounder, the financing will be delivered through EDC to strengthen Canadian aerospace supply chains.

The deal follows a campaign by De Havilland Canada advocating for a federally supported national fleet of waterbombers to assist provinces and territories with wildfire suppression. While the agreement supports increased manufacturing capacity, it does not establish a national firefighting fleet or constitute a direct federal purchase of the aircraft.
