De La Salle College investigation follows death of student in Douala

An investigation is underway following the death of 11-year-old student Ozanne Moukoko Essoe at De La Salle College in Douala, Cameroon. The student was found unconscious in the school's restrooms on September 18, 2026, and subsequently died after being transported to Laquintinie Hospital.

Conflicting accounts regarding the cause of death have emerged, ranging from a sudden medical malaise to allegations of sexual assault. The victim's father, Henri Moukoko, has called for a transparent and independent investigation, citing contradictory information provided to the family during the incident.

On September 25, Cameroon's Minister of Secondary Education, Pauline Nalova Lyonga, visited the school to inspect the premises and meet with students. She also visited the Moukoko family in Bessengue. This visit follows a previous inspection by the Governor of the Littoral region. Authorities have promised to conduct a full inquiry to establish the exact circumstances and determine any legal responsibilities.
