DEA Director accuses high-level Mexican officials of cartel collaboration

DEA Director Terry Cole has accused high-level Mexican officials of direct collaboration with drug cartels, specifically the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). During recent interviews, Cole stated that U.S. Department of Justice investigations have exposed government corruption networks that facilitate criminal activities.

Cole highlighted a recent indictment involving ten Mexican officials and former officials, including Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, who are accused of conspiring to traffic drugs and protect the 'Los Chapitos' faction in exchange for bribes. Additionally, Cole identified Juan Carlos Valencia, known as 'El Pelón,' as a top priority target within the CJNG.

Despite these accusations, Cole emphasized the strong bilateral cooperation between the DEA and Mexican security authorities, noting that he maintains daily communication and intelligence exchange with Mexico’s Security Secretary, Omar García Harfuch. Regarding potential unilateral U.S. operations on Mexican soil, Cole stated that such actions would be subject to the direct orders of the President of the United States.
