DEA Schedules June 29, 2026 Hearing on Marijuana Rescheduling

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced a formal hearing to be held June 29 2026 at its Arlington, Virginia facility, to examine whether marijuana should be moved from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act. The proceeding, expected to run until July 15, follows recent federal actions that placed FDA‑approved cannabis products and state‑medical cannabis into Schedule III.

The agency’s notice listed only parties that have opposed the reform as eligible participants, including the National Drug & Alcohol Screening Association, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Smart Approaches to Marijuana, and the states of Nebraska, Idaho, Indiana and Louisiana, along with other individuals and groups that claim to be “adversely affected.” Advocates for rescheduling, industry groups, and patient organizations were denied attendance.

The outcome could affect federal research rules, tax treatment, banking access and other regulatory aspects for the U.S. cannabis industry, though it would not legalize the plant nationwide.
