DEACERO advances steel decarbonisation as Eurofer warns of market pressures in Europe

Grupo DEACERO, a fully Mexican steelmaker, released its fourth Sustainability Report showing a 77% lower CO₂ intensity than the global average for 2025 and positioning its product within the "green steel" category defined by CRU 2025. The company became the first steel producer worldwide to obtain simultaneous validation of its climate targets under the Science Based Targets initiative’s Steel Core Boundary and certification from the Global Steel Climate Council. Renewable energy now supplies 15% of DEACERO’s electricity, up from 5% in 2020, with a goal of 60% clean power by 2030, and the firm avoided roughly 400,000 tonnes of CO₂e in 2025.

In Europe, the European Steel Association (Eurofer) is lobbying to protect the sector from high energy costs, weak demand and a global overcapacity of more than 700 million tonnes. Eurofer warns that subsidised Chinese production undercuts European firms, leading to imports at prices that domestic producers cannot match. The association is urging EU authorities to adopt protective measures as steel output remains about 20 million tonnes below pre‑COVID levels. Both developments highlight the divergent strategies the steel industry is pursuing to remain competitive amid environmental and market challenges.
