Deacon Anthony Pollio Killed in Grizzly Attack on Montana Trail

Anthony Pollio, a 33‑year‑old Catholic deacon from Davie, Florida, died after a grizzly bear attacked him on the Mt. Brown Lookout Trail in Glacier National Park, Montana, in early May 2024. Investigators said Pollio, hiking alone in low light, surprised an adult male bear. He deployed bear spray, then fell about 93 feet (28 m) down a steep slope. After climbing part of the way back, the bear re‑engaged, delivering fatal bites. The attack was classified as defensive, not predatory, and the bear was identified as a longtime resident with no prior attacks. This was the park’s first fatal bear incident since 1998. Officials emphasized safety measures such as carrying bear spray, avoiding solitary night hikes, and making noise to reduce surprise encounters.
