Dead crocodiles in Puerto Vallarta; fish kill from sargassum in Quintana Roo

In Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, six crocodiles were found dead over a two‑week period. The deaths, reported by civil protection and rescue teams, showed no external injuries, and authorities have not opened formal investigations. Municipal environmental sustainability director Roberto Ornelas described the loss as lamentable for the coastal ecosystem and reminded the public that harming or capturing these reptiles is a federal crime. Officials also advised residents to avoid entering the sea after 5 p.m. in the affected coastal stretch.

Along a kilometer of beach at Punta Caracol, Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, hundreds of fish—including sardines, jureles, and other species—were found dead, a mortality linked to massive sargassum accumulation that depletes dissolved oxygen in the water. Local fishermen, residents and environmental firms cited the algae’s decay as the cause. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a forthcoming plan, to be presented in about two weeks, to formalize a specialist group, expand the navy’s capacity to collect sargassum at sea, and coordinate actions with state, municipal and hotel authorities.
