Cancer cells use antioxidants to shield tumors from T-cells

Researchers from the University of Cambridge and Oregon Health & Science University have identified a mechanism by which cancer cells evade the immune system. According to a study published in the journal Science, tumor cells release high amounts of the antioxidant enzyme Peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1) into their surroundings. This process neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) that killer T-cells require for activation and signaling, effectively creating a protective shield that slows down the immune response.

In related medical research, a study led by the National Cancer Institute indicates that men are more likely to be diagnosed with 20 different types of cancer, including stomach, lung, and tongue cancer, at later stages than women. This delayed diagnosis may contribute to higher mortality rates among men.

Additionally, new findings in Alzheimer's research suggest that structural brain changes visible on MRI scans can occur more than seven years before the appearance of amyloid plaques, which have traditionally been considered the earliest detectable sign of the disease.

Finally, a study published in Perspectives on Psychological Science found that verbal communication is declining, with Americans speaking approximately 300 fewer words per day on average compared to previous years, a trend particularly pronounced in individuals under the age of 25.
