Deaf dancers in Burkina Faso use Vibra-Signe technique to interpret music
In Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, deaf and non-verbal dancers are utilizing the ‘Vibra-Signe’ technique to interpret music through physical sensations and visual cues. Developed by instructor and choreographer Yaya Sanou, the method allows performers to feel percussion through vibrations in the floor and follow rhythm via facial expressions, hand signs, and body gestures.
The Fientan Company, founded by Sanou a decade ago, uses this approach to blend traditional and modern dance styles. The group has achieved international recognition, including a gold medal for dance creation at the 2023 Francophone Games in Kinshasa, and has performed in Germany and Ivory Coast.
In a region where government support and resources for the deaf community are often limited, the initiative serves as a tool for social empowerment. The company’s name, Fientan, translates to ‘without disability’ in the local Dioula language, reflecting the group's focus on expression and resilience.
