Dealu Mare region establishes itself as a major Romanian viticultural hub

The Dealu Mare region in Prahova County, Romania, stands as one of the country’s most significant viticultural areas. According to the Prahova County Development Strategy, the county held 6,834 hectares of vineyards in 2021, making it the most important viticultural county in the South-Muntenia region.

Localities such as Valea Călugărească, Urlați, and Ceptura are central to the Dealu Mare designation. The Dealu Mare Professional Vitivinicultural Association manages approximately 1,500 hectares of vineyards across Prahova and Buzău, producing wines with Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) and Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) status. The region is noted for its Feteasca Neagră grapes and its potential for enotourism due to its proximity to Bucharest.

In the field of specialized production, oenologist Claudiu Porumb has worked to refine traditional flavors. His creation, ‘Ierbarul’, utilizes a base of healthy wine infused with 33 types of local spontaneous flora, including wormwood, to transform once-common ingredients into a unique aromatic product.
