Dean Elgar to retire from professional cricket in 2026

Former South African cricket captain Dean Elgar has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket at the conclusion of the 2026 English county season. The 39-year-old opener, who currently plays for Essex, cited the desire to spend more time with his partner and children in South Africa as the primary motivation for his decision.

Elgar’s professional career has spanned over two decades. During his international tenure with the Proteas, he played 86 Test matches, scoring 5,347 runs with an average of approximately 37 and recording 14 centuries. He captained South Africa in 18 Tests, noting that leading the team to a victory over England at Lord’s remains one of his proudest professional achievements.

After concluding his international career, Elgar joined Essex in 2024. Essex director of cricket Chris Silverwood praised his resilience and the influence he has had on the club’s younger players.
