Deandra Kontou charged with nine sexual offences involving Newington student

Former Newington College teacher Deandra Kontou, 32, has been charged with nine sexual offences following allegations of abuse involving a student in 2017. The charges include aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, grooming via an electronic device, and exposing a minor to indecent material.

The alleged misconduct occurred over a six-month period, including during school hours in Stanmore and during a senior school trip to Fitzroy Island on the Great Barrier Reef. During the trip, Kontou is accused of sexually touching the student twice during the day and sexually assaulting him late at night.

Kontou resigned from Newington College after the allegations were raised with school staff. She was subsequently employed at Georges River College Senior Campus in 2024, though the charges do not relate to her time there. The NSW Department of Education has launched an urgent review into her recruitment, and her teaching accreditation has been revoked. She is currently suspended without pay. Newington College has referred the matter to the NSW Police and the Office of the Children’s Guardian.
