Dear You film achieves $300 million box office success

The Teochew Min-language family drama ‘Dear You’, directed by Lan Hongchun, has achieved unprecedented commercial success, grossing approximately $283 million to $300 million on a production budget of roughly $2 million. Originally released in mainland China, the film saw significant reach across Asia, including Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia.

The story follows a debt-ridden grandson traveling to Thailand to investigate his grandmother’s billionaire husband, exploring themes of remittance, absence, and family connections within the Chinese diaspora. The film is scheduled to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as part of the China Film Showcase from September 14–16.

Industry observers note that the film’s success reflects a shift in the Chinese market toward diverse, culturally specific narratives that move beyond traditional blockbuster spectacles.
