Dear You film to expand to North American theaters

The independent Teochew-language film ‘Dear You’, directed by Lan Hongchun, is set to expand to North American theaters on September 4 following significant commercial success in China. The low-budget drama follows a young man traveling from Guangdong province to Thailand to find his grandfather in hopes of settling debts, only to discover a story of unexpected benevolence involving ‘qiaopi’—traditional letters and remittances sent by Chinese expatriates.

After a minimal initial promotion, the film rose to the top of the Chinese box office, eventually earning over 1.9 billion yuan (approximately $300 million). The production utilized largely non-professional actors and was developed from personal histories gathered from over 120 elderly migrants in the Chaoshan region. Well Go USA will handle the North American distribution.
