Villa Gesell toddler’s death sparks renewed probe into mother’s prior child fatalities

A two‑year‑old girl, Isabella, died on July 24‑25, 2026, after being taken to the Hospital Municipal Arturo Illia in Villa Gesell without signs of life. The autopsy showed obstructive asphyxia caused by broncoaspiration while feeding, with no evidence of physical violence. Prosecutor Juan Pablo Calderón opened a case classified as “averiguación de causales de muerte” and ordered additional forensic studies.

The child’s mother, 44‑year‑old Lucía Sosa, has previously been investigated for the deaths of two other daughters—Candela (2013) and Yazmín (2016)—in Mar del Plata. Both earlier cases ended in acquittal after forensic reports found natural causes. Sosa has also been reported to suffer from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a fact noted by a family lawyer. In response to the current investigation, the other children in the family have been placed under protective care and further pericial examinations are ongoing.

Authorities continue to assess whether any criminal conduct contributed to Isabella’s death.
