Debbie Allen advocates for HIV support networks for Black women

Debbie Allen is advocating for increased community support for Black women facing HIV, a demographic that experiences diagnosis rates 12 times higher than White women. Her advocacy is informed by personal experiences with the epidemic during her early career in theater and television.

Allen previously directed a landmark 1991 episode of ‘A Different World’ that addressed HIV/AIDS to combat misinformation. She is now participating in Merck’s ‘Your Hive of Whole Health’ campaign, which emphasizes the importance of building a support network of providers, family, and peers to address mental, spiritual, and emotional health alongside medical treatment.

While antiretroviral treatments have transformed HIV into a manageable condition, the medical landscape continues to evolve. In the United States, more than half of those diagnosed with HIV are now aged 50 or older.
