Florida holds primary elections for governor and Congress

Florida voters are heading to the polls for primary elections that include high-stakes races for governor, U.S. Senate, and several congressional seats. These elections are the first to utilize new congressional maps approved earlier this year, which many analysts suggest favor Republican candidates.

In the Republican gubernatorial primary, Congressman Byron Donalds is the leading candidate and holds a Donald Trump endorsement. He faces competition from Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins, former House Speaker Paul Renner, and businessman James Fishback. Prediction markets heavily favor Donalds for the nomination.

In the Democratic congressional contests, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is running in a newly drawn, majority-Black district. Her candidacy has sparked debate regarding racial representation, as she faces several Black challengers, including progressive organizer Elijah Manley and former Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.

Other notable races include the Republican primary for the 19th Congressional District, featuring candidate John Strand, and the 7th Congressional District, where incumbent Rep. Cory Mills faces reelection amid ethics investigations.
