Debrecen Court sentences driver to prison for fatal drunk-driving crash
The Debrecen Court of Appeals has issued a final sentence of five years and six months in prison for a man responsible for a fatal accident on Main Road 48 in May 2024. The driver, who was driving at speeds between 140 and 145 km/h while under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his vehicle after attempting to overtake another car, resulting in a head-on collision.
The collision caused the deaths of a 76-year-old man and his wife at the scene. The court reduced the original sentence of six years and three months, citing the defendant's admission of guilt, his lack of prior criminal record, his responsibility for two minor children, and the fact that he also sustained serious injuries in the crash. Additionally, the man has been banned from driving and from practicing public affairs for five years.
