Debrecen educational institutions mark milestones with record enrollment and anniversaries
The University of Debrecen is experiencing record enrollment, with its student population reaching nearly 34,000. During the opening of the Professors' Club 17th season, Rector Zoltán Bács noted that while the number of correspondence students has decreased, there is a significant increase in international students enrolled in paid programs. Approximately 8,000 international students are currently studying at the institution, 40 percent of whom are supported by the Stipendium Hungarium scholarship.
To accommodate the growing number of full-time students, which exceeds 26,000, the university is pursuing a dormitory development concept. Plans include a new 11,000-square-meter student accommodation facility integrated with a Learning Center on the Böszörményi út Campus, capable of housing 300 students. Additional dormitory construction is planned for the Kassai út Campus and areas purchased by the GTIDEA foundation to increase capacity and potentially stabilize rental prices.
Separately, the Svetits Catholic School in Debrecen is celebrating its 130th anniversary. Founded in 1896 by the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin, the institution has evolved from a girls' institute into a co-educational facility including a kindergarten, primary school, and high school. The anniversary year was marked by a jubilee school year opening ceremony.
