Argentina Senate advances disability system strengthening bill

The Argentine Senate has issued a favorable report for the Disability System Strengthening Law, which aims to replace the current emergency regime with a permanent framework before December 31. The bill, which has already received partial approval from the Chamber of Deputies, received broad support in committee from various political blocs, including La Libertad Avanza, the Justicialist Party, PRO, and the UCR.

Key provisions of the project include maintaining non-contributory pensions, ensuring they are updated according to inflation, and allowing for their compatibility with formal employment or 'monotributo' programs, provided total income stays within specific limits. The legislation also seeks to establish a permanent financing regime, a schedule to regularize debts with service providers, and continued incentives for employers who hire workers with disabilities.

The Senate is scheduled to debate the project in a plenary session on November 19. This legislative move follows recent government actions involving the suspension of thousands of disability pensions for audit purposes, a measure defended by the administration as a way to ensure resources reach those who meet the requirements.
