Hamburg reflects on 9/11 connections and hijacker history

Nearly 25 years after the September 11 attacks, Hamburg continues to reflect on the connection between the city and the terrorist cell. Three of the four hijackers—Mohammed Atta, Marwan Alshehhi, and Ziad Jarrah—lived and studied in Hamburg during the 1990s. Specifically, Atta, Alshehhi, and Ramzi Binalshibh shared residence at Marienstraße 54.

In July 2025, commemorative plaques were unveiled in front of the former US Consulate on the Außenalster to honor the victims. During the ceremony, Mayor Peter Tschentscher remarked that the shock was intensified by the realization that the attackers had lived and prepared their actions within the city. Security authorities in Hamburg maintain high vigilance due to this historical connection.
