Deckhand Shaun Shepherd dies after falling from boat in Scapa Flow, Orkney

Shaun Shepherd, a 22‑year‑old deckhand from North Uist, died on 23 July 2026 after falling from a vessel near Stromness in Scapa Flow, Orkney. He was employed by the local fishing company Inverlussa at the time of the accident.

Police Scotland responded to the scene and pronounced Shepherd dead shortly after the fall. The investigation is ongoing and the death is not being treated as suspicious. Inverlussa described Shepherd as an “exceptional deckhand” whose kindness and dedication were deeply respected. His sister Lauren announced his death on social media, thanking supporters for their sympathy. Shepherd’s remains will be returned to North Uist via the Lochmaddy ferry, with a funeral scheduled for 1 August.
