Declaration of Independence signing commemorated on 250th anniversary
On August 2, 1776 most of the 56 delegates to the Continental Congress affixed their signatures to the engrossed parchment of the Declaration of Independence, a month after the document was adopted on July 4, 1776. President of Congress John Hancock signed on July 4, authenticating the declaration, while other delegates signed in sequence from Josiah Bartlett of New Hampshire to George Walton of Georgia. Several delegates—John Dickinson, James Duane, Robert Livingston and John Jay—refused to sign, and five prominent figures including George Washington and Patrick Henry were absent from the ceremony. News of the declaration reached London on August 10, 1776, and the first printed copy bearing the signatures was issued on January 18, 1777 by printer Mary Katharine Goddard. The United States marks the 250th anniversary of this signing in 2026, reflecting on the historic act that launched the nation’s experiment in self‑government.
