Decluttering strategies and their impact on mental health

Research indicates a strong link between physical clutter and mental well-being. A 2022 survey by Cinch Home Services found that decluttering has a positive impact on mental health, while studies of middle-class Americans suggest that clutter-related environments are associated with less healthy cortisol patterns and increased depressed moods.

Neurological studies, including a 2024 study by Yale researchers, show that visual clutter can alter information flow in the brain’s primary visual cortex, directly reducing concentration levels. This occurs even when the individual is not consciously aware of the mess, as the brain must expend metabolic energy to suppress the visual distractions.

Experts suggest several strategies for effective organization:

• Systematic Approach: Rather than jumping between rooms, professionals recommend starting with high-traffic areas like the entryway to establish a sense of order. • Sorting Stations: Using designated bins for items to keep, donate, sell, or trash helps prevent decision fatigue. • Storage Solutions: Utilizing off-site storage for seasonal items or sentimental belongings can maintain living space functionality without requiring the immediate disposal of valued possessions.

Common psychological triggers for clutter include the ‘just in case’ mindset, where individuals retain unused items out of fear of future need, leading to an accumulation of possessions that can impede quality of life and financial stability.
