Deco Proteste warns Portuguese property owners of potential IMI overpayments

The publisher Deco Proteste has issued a warning that some property owners in Portugal may be paying more Municipal Property Tax (IMI) than necessary. This occurs when the Tax Authority fails to automatically update certain factors used to calculate the property's Tax Patrimonial Value (VPT).

Key factors such as the age of the property (vetustez coefficient) and location coefficients may not be reflected in current assessments. Deco Proteste suggests that using an online simulator via the ‘Impostos Simples’ platform can help owners identify potential savings for 2027.

However, the organization advises consumers to perform simulations before requesting a formal revaluation. They caution that a new assessment could also lead to an increase in the property's tax value and, consequently, a higher tax burden.
