Deep Fission plans underground nuclear reactors in Kansas, targeting 18.5 GW for data centers
U.S. startup Deep Fission proposes to place small pressurized‑water reactors about 1.6 km deep in boreholes at a site in Parsons, Kansas. The company says the “gravity nuclear reactor” concept could cut construction costs by eliminating large steel‑concrete containment structures, with rock and the water column providing natural shielding. Each unit is designed to produce roughly 15 MW, and the firm has received non‑binding intent letters for up to 18.5 GW of capacity, mainly from data‑center operators that need continuous power for AI and cloud services. Deep Fission argues that deep placement improves safety against tornadoes, floods, tsunamis, aircraft impacts and sabotage, though regulatory approval and operational experience are still pending. The plan remains at a concept stage, with drilling already underway but no commercial contracts confirmed.
