Deep sleep and early bedtime improve health, mood and daily performance

Experts explain that deep (slow‑wave) sleep is essential for physical recovery, immune function, memory consolidation and cardiovascular health. Insufficient time in this stage can cause morning fatigue, concentration problems, irritability and, over time, increased risk of metabolic and brain disorders.

Separate research shows that people who regularly go to bed around 21:00 tend to obtain higher‑quality sleep, report greater happiness, have more energy, exercise more, and experience lower rates of depression. Early sleepers also benefit from consistent circadian rhythms, reduced "social jet lag," and more daylight exposure, which together support better mood, cognition and family interactions.
