Deepavali celebrations approach in Singapore

Singapore is preparing for the upcoming Deepavali celebrations, a major holiday observed on November 8, 2026. The festival, which symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, is rooted in ancient traditions and follows the Indian Lunar Calendar.

To mark the occasion, gov.sg and marketing agency DSTNCT have released a Deepavali comedy film titled ‘Family assemble!’. Directed by S. S. Vikneshwaran, the film features an ensemble cast including Jamuna Rani, Indra Chandran, and Bala Adhithya, with a cameo by Koh Chieng Mun. The story focuses on a family rediscovering the importance of being present with one another by setting aside digital screens during the festive period.

In Singapore, the festival is widely referred to as Deepavali, a term more common among the Tamil community, whereas ‘Diwali’ is the Hindi term more frequently used in North India. While the festival traditionally spans five days, Singapore observes the main festivities on the third day to honor the goddess Lakshmi.
