DeepMind's WeatherNext AI adds a day to cyclone forecasts
Google DeepMind and Google Research have released WeatherNext, an artificial‑intelligence model that predicts tropical cyclone tracks and intensity up to a full day earlier than existing operational systems. The model, trained on roughly 20 terabytes of global atmospheric data and historic storm records, can generate a 15‑day forecast in under a minute on a TPU, unifying trajectory and intensity prediction in a single system.
WeatherNext’s code and model weights have been made open‑source on GitHub, enabling meteorological agencies worldwide—including the U.S. National Hurricane Center, the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere and the UK Met Office—to test and adopt the technology. In trials, the model correctly forecast the rapid intensification and landfall of Hurricane Melissa, giving authorities an extra 24 hours to issue warnings and organize evacuations. Mike Brennan, director of the U.S. National Hurricane Center, highlighted that the additional day could significantly improve preparedness and reduce loss of life.
