DeepSeek plans massive Huawei chip deployment in Inner Mongolia
Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is planning a massive deployment of at least 160,000 Huawei Ascend 950DT AI accelerators at a new data center in Inner Mongolia. The facility is intended to serve as a major hub for AI inference, though the company reportedly continues to rely on Nvidia hardware for model training.
The move is part of a broader Chinese effort to reduce technological dependence on US-based Nvidia following export restrictions. However, the scale of the project faces significant hurdles. Huawei currently lacks the production capacity to meet the full demand, and shortages in high-end memory and other components are expected to limit the output of the 950DT chips to the low hundreds of thousands this year.
In a related development within the Chinese semiconductor sector, SMIC reported record-breaking financial results for the first half of 2026. The company's half-year profit surged 111 percent to 589 million euros, driven largely by domestic demand for AI-related chips and the state-supported shift toward local hardware providers.
