DeepSeek valuation exceeds $50 billion after $7.4 billion funding round
Chinese AI startup DeepSeek closed its inaugural financing round, raising more than 50 billion yuan (about $7.4 billion). The capital injection lifted the company's post‑money valuation to over $50 billion, making it the most valuable AI unicorn in China.
Founder and CEO Liang Wenfeng contributed roughly 20 billion yuan (around $3 billion) and retained near‑total control through a limited‑partnership structure. External investors such as Tencent, JD.com, CATL and NetEase placed their money into a partnership managed by Liang, receiving no voting rights and agreeing to a five‑year lock‑up. The state‑backed National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund invested 1 billion yuan directly in DeepSeek and is exempt from the lock‑up.
The round also supports DeepSeek’s upcoming models, including the low‑cost V4 series, which aim to halve computing requirements while handling up to one million tokens. Microsoft has reportedly explored using a customized DeepSeek model for its Copilot offerings, highlighting growing international interest.
The financing gives DeepSeek resources to expand its compute infrastructure, retain talent, and compete with U.S. AI firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
