DeepSeek raises approximately $15 billion in major funding round

Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has reportedly raised approximately 100 billion yuan (US$15 billion) in its latest funding round. This massive influx of capital, one of the largest in Chinese history, marks a significant increase from the company's original fundraising target of 50 billion yuan, which was adjusted twice during negotiations.

Major investors in the round include battery giant CATL and internet conglomerate Tencent Holdings, both of whom are existing shareholders. New backers reportedly include a diverse group of industrial and technology firms such as Geely, Meituan, GigaDevice, Midea, NetEase, and investment firms like Legend Capital and IDG Capital. The round also saw participation from semiconductor-focused capital such as Zhongxin Juyuan.

The capital is expected to be used to enhance DeepSeek's computing power, expand its data center infrastructure, and accelerate the development of advanced AI models to compete with US-based labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. Additionally, the company is reportedly preparing for a potential initial public offering (IPO) on China's STAR Market, having engaged CITIC Securities for the process.

This financial milestone comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, as US federal agencies were recently ordered to remove DeepSeek's technology from government systems due to national security concerns regarding data privacy and potential foreign influence.
