Deer in Opole caught in plastic net raises wildlife safety concerns

A male red deer was spotted in the Bierkowice district of Opole with a plastic net tangled around its head, likely originating from agricultural waste such as hay‑sack or field‑netting. Forest officials said the incident exemplifies the dangers of littering in natural areas.

Municipal veterinarians attempted to sedate the animal from a distance of about 20 metres, but were unable to free it. The deer’s high sensitivity to sound and scent makes close contact difficult. Authorities warned that plastic debris, which does not decompose, poses a growing threat to wildlife across Poland, where roughly 35,000 red deer are estimated to live.

The incident has prompted local officials to call for better waste management and to highlight the broader environmental impact of discarded plastics on animals.
