Córdoba releases first GPS‑tracked jaguarundi back to the wild

Environmental police and the Parque de la Biodiversidad reintroduced a rescued yaguarundí (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) in the rural area of Altos de Chipión, Córdoba Province. The juvenile, rescued in August 2025 when it was about one and a half months old, was raised in captivity under a strict anti‑imprinting protocol and fitted with a satellite‑tracking collar before release. Researchers from the Institute of Diversity and Animal Ecology (IDEA‑CONICET) will monitor its movements to study the species’ behavior and improve future conservation efforts. The same operation also released a young capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) at the same site.

The release marks the first use of GPS telemetry on a jaguarundi in Córdoba, providing valuable data on habitat use and ranging patterns that could inform strategies to protect this shy, elusive feline, which is native to South American ecosystems.
