Deer rutting season begins in Italian national parks

The autumn mating season for deer has arrived in several Italian regions, marked by the distinctive roaring known as ‘bramito’. This vocalization is used by males to signal their strength to rivals and attract females.

In the Valtellina region, the phenomenon is expected to peak between late September and early October. The Stelvio National Park is organizing guided excursions to allow for respectful observation of the animals in areas such as Val Zebrù and San Giacomo di Fraele. Experts note that the calls are most frequent from dusk until dawn when the environment is quieter.

Similarly, in the Casentino area within the Casentinesi Forests National Park, the rutting season is most intense from late September to early October. Nature enthusiasts can observe the phenomenon through low-impact walking itineraries, such as the route from Passo della Calla toward the Sasso Fratino area, coinciding with the onset of autumn foliage.
