Deer survival strategies during cold and rainy weather

Deer, specifically white-tailed deer, employ various behavioral strategies to survive harsh weather conditions such as cold, wind, and rain.

To combat cold and wind, deer seek shelter in coniferous forests, valleys, thick underbrush, or the lee sides of hills to minimize heat loss. They also conserve energy by reducing unnecessary movement and increasing bedding time. In some cases, deer may huddle together to share conductive heat.

Rainfall also significantly influences deer movement. While deer typically show decreased activity during heavy downpours, they often exhibit increased movement immediately before and after rainfall.
