Defender Pau Cubarsí Tipped for Ballon d'Or by Fabio Cannavaro after World Cup
After the World Cup final, media in Slovakia debated the 2023 Ballon d'Or. While many pointed to forward Lamine Yamal, midfielder Rodri and winger Ousmane Dembélé as leading candidates, former Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro argued that the award should go to young defender Pau Cubarsí, citing his outstanding season at both club and international level. Cannavaro noted that the last defender to win the prize was himself in 2006 and said Cubarsí “deserves it more than anyone else.” The ceremony is scheduled for 26 October.
Another Slovak commentator, former Slovana Bratislava legend Fabio Nigro, reflected on Argentina’s loss in the final, describing the national disappointment and economic hardships that added to the sentiment. He contrasted Argentina’s performance with Spain’s victory and emphasized that the tournament’s outcome will be evaluated soberly in the coming days.
