Defense Minister Koizumi outlines security priorities and JSDF support plans

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, reappointed in the second Takaichi Cabinet, has outlined his priorities for his second term. Key objectives include the revision of three major security-related documents scheduled for later this year, strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance, and improving the treatment of Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) personnel.

To address critical personnel shortages, the Ministry of Defense plans to establish a ‘Retiree Self-Defense Force Members and Families Support Agency.’ Aiming for a 2027 launch, the agency would centralize services such as re-employment support, benefits, and childcare assistance for families. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve morale and recruitment, as JSDF personnel numbers currently remain below official quotas.

The new cabinet structure emphasizes policy continuity by retaining several key ministers, including Koizumi and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. However, the administration faces scrutiny regarding political fund reforms following recent scandals and the inclusion of members previously involved in undisclosed fund issues. The government also faces challenges in managing legislative discussions with opposition parties regarding consumption tax and budget approvals.
