Defense Minister reveals political pressure led to grenade accident
Hungarian Defense Minister Ruszin-Szendi Romulusz has disclosed details regarding a grenade accident in Újdörögd and the funding of a military mission to Chad. During a closed session of the Parliamentary Defense and Law Enforcement Committee, the Minister stated that soldiers had previously advised against using live hand grenades during the training exercise. However, the task was carried out due to political pressure to expand the volunteer reserve program and increase personnel numbers.
The accident, which occurred during a training session for state employees, resulted in a government official losing both hands after a grenade exploded. While the prosecution previously terminated the criminal investigation due to a lack of a direct causal link between rule violations and the tragedy, the Minister emphasized that professional and political responsibility remains. No new legal proceedings can be initiated as the statute of limitations has expired.
Additionally, the Minister addressed the Chadian military mission, noting that nearly 4 billion HUF in public funds were spent on the program. He noted that Gáspár Orbán, the son of the former Prime Minister, played a significant role in the mission, suggesting that his family background provided substantial state support for the project.
