Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Removes Women from Navy Promotion List

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth intervened in the Navy’s promotion process, striking nine officers—including three women and two Black men—from a list of 31 sailors slated for promotion to one‑star admiral. As a result, no women will be promoted to the rank this year, despite women making up about a quarter of Navy officers.

Eight female Navy officers, speaking anonymously, said the cuts signal a career ceiling and fear that their advancement could become politicized. They expressed concerns that the decision undervalues their service and wondered whether it was intentional.

The Pentagon offered no explanation for the removals, stating only that promotions are based on merit and do not consider gender or race. Hegseth has previously argued that women receive preferential treatment and has accused the Pentagon of “promoting … for the wrong reasons based on … gender quotas.” The episode has sparked debate over gender equity and leadership selection within the U.S. military.
