Defense sectors accelerate drone integration and counter-drone technologies

The defense industry is shifting toward the integration of attritable drones, with the British and Italian armies adopting a ‘20:40:40’ concept. This model allocates 20% of combat mass to crewed assets, 40% to reusable attritable drones, and 40% to fully expendable drones.

To support this shift, experts emphasize the need for communication architectures specifically engineered for defense standards rather than consumer technology to mitigate programmatic risks.

Simultaneously, the U.S. Air Force is accelerating the development of AI-enabled, layered counter-drone defense architectures. Following lessons learned from conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, the 31st Air Task Force recently conducted trials at Hurlburt Field, Florida. The demonstration showcased a combination of surveillance, electronic warfare, and low-cost kinetic interception designed to protect dispersed bases from persistent, inexpensive drone attacks when traditional jamming fails.
